The most important goal of personal dental care is to prevent cavities from forming in the teeth. To do this and to maintain healthy teeth, you must remove plaque – a layer of bacteria that is found on the surface of your teeth.
You can prevent plaque from forming by brushing your teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once a day.
When buying toothpaste, choose one that has a great amount of fluoride to keep your mouth cavity-free.
It was discovered that one out of ten people has a propensity to accumulate tartar fast. Tartar is plaque that is complicated to remove because it is already in hardened form.
There are anti-tartar toothpastes and mouthwashes which help prevent tartar formation. Another way to prevent tartar formation is brushing your teeth located near the salivary glands.
However, brushing cannot remove the plaque and food particles between the teeth, under the gum line or within braces. A dental floss is the solution. Flossing should be done at least once a day.
There are different kinds of flosses and these depend on the space that a person has in between her teeth. Unwaxed floss is usually recommended by dentists because it is easier to glide through narrow spaces.
When flossing your teeth, you must be very careful not to injure your gums. Do not force the floss under the gums; just curve the floss around the edge of your tooth and form a letter “c” then glide the floss up and down the side of each tooth. You should floss the back sides of your teeth as well.
