The appearance of wrinkles on the face is one of the worst signs of aging. Many people use expensive anti-aging creams to get rid of these wrinkles.
Researchers at the Hallym University in South Korea have discovered that an antioxidant named ellagic acid can prevent wrinkles and reduce sun damage caused by UV rays.
This antioxidant is prevalent in raspberries, strawberries, cranberries, pomegranates and nuts.
For the latest research purposes, 12 mice were subjected to UV rays three times weekly for eight weeks.
During the course of these eight weeks, ellagic acid was applied on the skin surface of half of the exposed mice.
The mice that received ellagic acid showed reduced wrinkle formation. The mice without the antioxidant developed wrinkles and thickening of the skin.
The antioxidant prevents collagen destruction and inflammatory response – major causes of wrinkles in human skin cells.
The results were presented at the Experimental Biology 2009 meeting in New Orleans.
