Researchers have found a sunless tanning solution without any risks that are usually associated with too much sun.
Scientists from Massachusetts General Hospital found a method to block a molecular switch that turns off the natural synthesis of melanin, the pigment that protects people from the sun’s harmful UV rays.
The study was done on mice, but researchers strongly believe it could lead to a way for people to obtain a safe natural tan.
Mice were given a drug to block the switch. As a result, they had notably darker skin after 5 days compared to mice that did not have the drug applied to their skin.
In other words, the drug stimulates pigmentation. No sun is needed.
Unfortunately, the drug cannot penetrate human skin. Scientists are now looking for drugs that can be safely used on people.
In about 5 years, we could have a product that safely tans human skin. When you rub it in the skin daily, it would cause a tan to slowly develop. The tan should last for several weeks, before slowly fading.
The research was published in the journal Genes & Development.
