Skin Tips by Celebrity Dermatologist

Celebrity dermatologist, Dr. Jody Levine, of Plastic Surgery and Dermatology of NYC, offers simple tips to achieve healthy skin and your own red carpet glow.

- Essential ingredients for a daily face regimen include an antioxidant, daily moisturizer with broad spectrum sun block and a retinoid or retinol.

- When dealing with breakouts, stay away from spot treatments and using products like alcohol and benzoyl peroxide. Instead use an all over toner so that you don’t create dry patches.

- Exfoliating can be harsh on skin. I encourage my patients to use chemical peels rather than abrasive materials to exfoliate. I also like products with natural granules such as ground oatmeal and micro-sifted bamboo as they are gentle on skin.

- A common misconception about sunscreen is that “waterproof” means that you are protected for the day. To be fully-protected, you should re-apply every two to three hours.

- Look for moisturizers that contain vitamin F, such as Dial™ NutriSkin Dry Skin Lotion with Aloe, as it contains essential fatty acids and helps protect skin cells to prevent dry, scaly skin. This vitamin is especially great during winter and for those playing harsh weather sports.

- Ceramides are a component of fat that is found in the barrier of skin. This barrier is important for preventing the skin from losing too much water and for enabling the skin to protect the body against infection. Those with dry skin often need more ceramides to maintain a healthy skin barrier.
