Like any medical treatment, laser hair removal carries the risk of possible side effects and complications.
Whether or not you will develop one or more of the side effects depend on your skin characteristics. The problems can be temporary or permanent.
The likelihood of developing a temporary side effect is much bigger than developing a permanent problem.
A temporary complication can last anywhere from a day to several months before it disappears entirely.
The temporary side effects that can occur after laser hair removal include:
- Pain. You can feel it during the procedure, and after it is finished. During the treatment, the feeling of pain can be lessened by the use of a local anesthetic. For the period after the procedure, you can alleviate the pain using over-the-counter or prescribed pain medication.
- Swelling. It usually happens at or near the area that was treated for hair removal. Topical treatments, like creams or ointments, typically relieve the swelling.
- Redness. It can be treated with a topical cream or ointment.
- Blistering can be an extremely painful and visible side effect of laser treatment.
- Hyperpigmentation. Normally, this temporary problem will disappear on its own.
Permanent side effects of laser hair removal include:
- Skin discoloration. It is usually a permanent lightning of the skin in the area that was treated.
- Scarring. It mostly happens as an accident during the treatment or by being treated by someone with minimal training.
- Burns. They hardly ever happen. They are usually caused by an inexperienced technician.
You can minimize the complications and side effects associated with laser hair removal by making sure that the treatment is done by a qualified professional.
