If you want to learn how to give a professional manicure, then you need to enroll in classes, because this profession requires a license. If you just want to learn how to give yourself a manicure at home, then here are some tips for you.
Begin by removing any existing polish. Use cotton and fingernail polish remover. Some salon polishes have acetone in them, and you will need a heavier type of remover. But, most polishes can be removed with a basic non- acetone remover.
In case you have an aversion to cotton you can use plastic jars that contain finger nail polish remover.
Next, soak your hands in water. If you want you can add some oils or cleaning solution to the water. Allow your fingers to soak for about 5 minutes.
After five minutes, dry your fingers thoroughly before trimming and shaping your nails. You can use a buffer on the nail to smooth it, before shaping.
While your cuticles are still soft, use an orange stick to gently press your cuticles back. This will give your nails a more groomed appearance as well as allow your nails to grow longer.
The next step in giving yourself a manicure is to shape your nails. You may shape them any way you want.
You can round your finger nails or you can have a more squared off look. In any case, only use the emery board in one direction. If you go back and forth with the board, you will damage the nails.
This will take a little longer, but the results will be worth your patience. Now, apply a moisturizer to your hands.
Next, polish those digits. Before using color, apply a base coat to the nail. This will smooth out any imperfections and help the color bond better to the nail.
Wait 2-3 minutes for the base coat to dry, and then apply one layer of color. Remember, less is more. Don’t put it on too thick. You can always apply another coat later.
Finally, apply a clear coat to prevent chipping and add extra shine. Touch nothing for about an hour to keep your nails from smudging.
