Ladies, Wash Your Hands!

Women have a drastically greater diversity of bacteria on their palms than men!

This is according to a new study conducted by the University of Colorado at Boulder.

The study also discovered that human hands harbor far higher numbers of microbes than previously thought.

Researchers found a typical hand had approximately 150 different species of bacteria living on it.

The researchers took samples from the palms of 51 college students — that’s 102 hands.

They identified 4,742 species of bacteria overall, only 5 of which were on every hand.

Even the right and left palms of the same individual shared an average of only 17% of the same bacteria types.

Scientists are unsure why hands of women are more bacteria prone than men but think it may be related to their less acidic skin. Men generally have more acidic skin than women.

Regular hand washing did not eliminate bacteria; the colonies reestablish quickly after hand washing.

The researchers point out it’s nothing to panic about, the vast majority of the bacteria are harmless.

The study was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
