The Food and Drug Administration has approved more than 5,000 cosmetic chemicals. But, most of them have never been tested for safety. According to the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, 884 of these chemicals are toxic.
Every year, over 200,000 people visit the emergency room due to allergic reactions from cosmetic ingredients, such as synthetic fragrances, colors and preservatives.
Unfortunately, many of these dangerous chemicals can be found in the everyday beauty products. Independent studies reveal that the ingredients used in hair dyes, deodorants, lipsticks and skin creams are potentially dangerous.
The greatest danger from using cosmetic and beauty products comes from the daily exposure to carcinogenic chemicals and cancer precursors.
One of the most widely used carcinogens is the coal-tar color, listed on labels as FD&C and D&C colors.
Chemicals called endocrine disrupters can cause serious health damage. The most common type of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in cosmetics are the phthalates. This chemical can be found in several popular hair sprays, deodorants, perfumes, hand lotions and nail polishes.
Because cosmetics usually sit on store shelves for months before they are sold, strong preservatives are added to prolong shelf life. Most of these preservatives, such as DMDM hydantoin, diazolidinyl urea and quaternium-15, release formaldehyde as they break down.
In addition to the above mentioned compounds, stay away from petroleum-derived ingredients such as mineral oil and petrolatum.
