How long can you keep beauty products? When should you get rid of them?
Lots of people do not know if a specific cosmetic or beauty product is still “good,” after it has been opened.
The FDA does not require manufacturers to print expiration dates on labels. Exceptions are sunscreen and acne products.
In general, you should completely use or discard skin care products within a year of opening. Eye creams and mascaras should be used within 3–6 months.
Natural products that contain plant–derived ingredients and no preservatives should also be used within six months.
Keep in mind these tips:
- mark the container with the date it was opened
- store products in cool, dry conditions and cap them tightly after each use
- take inventory of your beauty products periodically; discard anything that looks or smells odd
