Make Your Eyelashes Longer, Thicker with Latisse

The Food and Drug Administration has approved the first drug that will help with producing longer, thicker eyelashes.

The eyelash-growing drug called Latisse is made by Allergan Inc., best known for its wrinkle-smoothing product Botox.

Latisse treats those who have hypotrichosis, a condition in which a person does not have enough eyelashes.

The drug contains the active ingredient of the glaucoma (an eye disease) drug Lumigan. Eyelash growth is a known side effect of Lumigan.

However, Lumigan is an eyedrop, while Latisse is applied to the base of the upper eyelash with a sterile, single-use-per-eye disposable applicator.

As a result, you get longer, thicker, darker lashes in as little as 8 weeks with full results in 16 weeks, according to Allergan.

Once treatment is stopped, eyelashes will gradually return to where they were before treatment.

Latisse may cause darkening of the eyelid skin, which may be reversible, and it may also cause increased brown pigmentation of the colored part of the eye, which is likely to be permanent.

It may also promote hair growth in other skin areas that it frequently touches.

The most common side effects are eye redness, itchy eyes, and skin hyperpigmentation.

This prescription drug that’s applied daily will be available starting in the first quarter of 2009.

Allergan said a 30-day supply will cost $120.
