Using topical estrogen creams can stimulate collagen production which improves the appearance of the skin.
However, new research from the University of Michigan Health System discovered that this effect is limited to areas not typically exposed to the sun.
In other words, the hormone cream estradiol can repair aging skin only if that skin has never been touched by the damaging UV rays of sunlight.
The two-week treatment increased collagen production in skin covering the hips, but no benefit was observed when the cream was applied to the face or forearm. Unfortunately, these are the exact areas that are most in need of repair.
In addition, the effect of estradiol appeared to be gender-specific – although men did have a benefit, it was less than the response noticed in women.
Researchers believe changes in the skin caused by long term sun exposure hinder its ability to boost collagen production.
The study is published in the Archives of Dermatology.
So, if you want to improve the appearance of your skin using estrogen creams, forget about it.
